Suicide Bomber Kills Eight Near Shi'ite Mosque In Baghdad

Iraqi officials say a suicide bomber detonated explosives near a Shi'ite mosque in eastern Baghdad on December 9, killing at least eight people.

Security officials and medical workers say at least 19 people were wounded by the explosion in Baghdad's Obeidi neighborhood, which is to the east of the predominantly Shi'ite neighborhood of Sadr City.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

But authorities said the attack had the hallmarks of a suicide bombing by Islamic State militants.

The bombing came a day after Iraqi officials announced that pro-government forces had begun to recapture neighborhoods from IS militants in Ramadi, the capital of Anbar Province that was seized by the Sunni extremist group earlier in 2015.
