U.S., Allies Conduct 12 Air Strikes Against Islamic State in Iraq

The U.S. military says American-led forces conducted 12 air strikes against Islamic State targets in seven Iraqi cities.

The Combined Joint Task Force said on June 14 that the strikes destroyed buildings, excavators, heavy machine guns, and a tunnel system and struck Islamic State tactical units and rocket-firing and mortar positions.

It said in a statement that the strikes occurred near Mosul, Sinjar, Tal Afar, Baiji, Falluja, Baghdadi, and Makhmur.

One strike was conducted in Syria, near Aleppo.

Meanwhile, Kurdish officials and a monitoring group said on June 14 that Syrian Kurdish forces were just outside a strategic Islamic State-held Syrian town near the Turkish border.

Kurdish fighters -- backed by allied rebels and air strikes by a U.S.-led coalition -- pressed their offensive on Tal Abyad, the officials said.

Tal Abyad is a vital gateway for the Islamic State (IS) extremist group to bring in new foreign fighters through neighboring Turkey.

The fighting prompted an exodus of civilians from the area who were trying to cross into neighboring Turkey.
