Karzai Visits Mudslide-Hit Area In Afghanistan

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has visited families affected by a recent deadly mudslide that hit the village of Ab-e-Barik in the country's northeast.

The office of the president said in a statement on May 7 Karzai sought to assure the villagers there was enough "relief assistance to distribute for the affected."

Karzai also pledged new homes will be built for those who have lost their homes to the natural disaster.

The collapse of a mountainside after heavy rains destroyed the village on May 2, with many victims thought to be buried beneath as much as 50 meters mud that cascaded down into a ravine.

UN and Afghan officials have estimated fatalities at anywhere between 500 and 2,700 people.

About 700 families have been displaced by the disaster and are living in the open around the ruined village.
Based on President Press Office's statement
