Cinemas in Kazakhstan have stopped showing "The Dictator," the satire from "Borat" comic actor Sacha Baron Cohen, after two weeks.

Officials of the Interfilm Company that distributes the film in Kazakhstan confirmed to RFE/RL that showings of the movie have been halted, but declined to say why.

Other foreign films that started being shown in Kazakh cinemas at the same time “The Dictator” was released continue to be presented in cinemas.

"The Dictator," which depicts a Middle East-style tyrant, was released worldwide in May.

The movie has been banned in the Central Asian states of Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.

To quote Upton Sinclair, "Man is an evasive beast, given to cultivating strange notions about himself."

"the dictator" basically is a mediocre, vulgar and tasteless film.
except for some allusion of criticism towards societal grievances and shortcomings in the u.s. and societies marked by repressive regimes in this world there are very few passages of funny humor. so, essentially, the film is not really recommendable.
yet, everyone should have the chance to make up his/her own mind. to prohibit the film only helps to promote PR.
actually, not very many people would talk about it without this element of "film being banned".
nice PR strategy!

finally, that the turkmen and tajik autocrats ban this film might simply reflect a certain dimension with respect to work aesthetic in film:
1. that their perception and jury like assessment in terms of neoformalism, film analysis and taste despite political repressiveness and arbitrariness is more advanced than those of some hollywood decision-makers and puppeteers.
wish for more sophistictated and elaborate films.

it seems directors like radu mihaileanu, nadine labaki, some indian and french directors and of course some! hollywood directors think more about film and arts than about money alone.
