Kazakh Education Official Fired After School Sex-Abuse Scandal

PETROPAVL, Kazakhstan -- A senior education official in northern Kazakhstan has been fired following a sex abuse scandal at a local boarding school, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

North Kazkahstan Province Governor Serik Bilyalov told the regional council on April 22 that Temirghali Abilmazhinov, head of the Education Directorate in North Kazkahstan Province, had been fired after it was proven that elementary-school pupils in a boarding school in the region had been systematically sexually abused by older students.

The scandal erupted after parents of some elementary school pupils demanded an investigation into their children's complaints. It was revealed that the children had been sexually abused by older students on a regular basis.

Nine teachers and employees at the boarding school were dismissed this week and may face charges of negligence. The North Kazakhstan police department has opened an investigation.
