U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has voiced optimism a cease-fire deal can still be restored in Syria despite escalating violence there.
Speaking in Geneva on May 3, Kerry also warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of “repercussions” unless he sticks to the agreement.
"The line they are trying to draw now would prohibit any kind of incursion of Aleppo, it will not allow Aleppo to fall," Kerry said.
Fighting in and around the city of Aleppo has all but shattered the shaky two-month-old truce between Syria’s government and moderate rebels.
Kerry also condemned a deadly hospital attack in Aleppo, saying the missile appears to have been fired from rebel-controlled territory.
At least 20 people died in the attack on May 3 when rocket fire struck the maternity hospital in a government-held section of Aleppo.
Kerry said Washington will not accept violence against civilians, no matter which side is to blame.
