NATO Soldiers, Ethnic Serbs Injured In Kosovo Clashes

Twenty-five soldiers serving with the NATO-led peacekeeping force in Kosovo and dozens of ethnic Serbians have reportedly been injured in clashes over roadblocks set up by Serbs in northern Kosovo.

A spokesman for the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR) said two of the NATO personnel -- a German commander and a soldier -- were shot by Serbs who fired small arms in the November 28 violence. The other injured soldiers are said to include Germans and Austrians.

Serbian reports said dozens of Serbians have sought medical aid after being hurt in the clashes.

Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga has condemned the violence, according to RFE/RL's Balkan Service, as have EU officials.

In Belgrade, Serbian President Boris Tadic, whose country does not recognize Kosovo's 2008 declaration of sovereignty, pleaded for calm and nonviolence.

KFOR spokesman Uwe Nowicki said NATO soldiers had used pepper spray, tear gas, rubber bullets, and water cannon to disperse Serbs who were trying to prevent NATO from removing a roadblock near the town of Zubin Potok.

Nowicki accused Serbs of using explosive devices and Molotov cocktails to attack the NATO-led troops.

"The protesters could not be called as peaceful demonstrators at all, but as violent and criminal,” said Nowicki. “Up to now, KFOR only used pepper spray, tear gas, rubber bullets, and water cannon. However, in life-threatening situations like this, KFOR soldiers will respond as of now with all proportionate and appropriate means."

Speaking in Pristina, Nicholas Hawton, a spokesman for the European Union law and justice mission in Kosovo (EULEX), denounced the violence.

"EULEX absolutely condemns violence of this kind against KFOR or against any international institutions," he said. "KFOR and EULEX are in northern Kosovo to try and improve and increase the rule of law and this violence is condemned and our thoughts are obviously with the two KFOR soldiers who have been injured this morning."

President Jahjaga repeated Pristina's call for the "criminals who attacked [the] KFOR soldiers" to face justice and Belgrade to "end its involvement and stop supporting criminal structures" in northern Kosovo, where many ethnic Serbs live, according to RFE/RL's Balkan Service.

Serbia President Tadic urged both sides to "immediately calm down the situation and ensure full freedom of movement exclusively through dialogue and without using violence."

Minority ethnic Serbs in northern Kosovo, backed by the Serbian government in Belgrade, continue to reject the three-year-old declaration of independence by Kosovo's ethnic Albanian leadership.

Kosovo independence has been recognized by some 85 countries, including the United States and most members of the European Union.

Fight for your lands Serbs, don't let our corrupted leader in the West give your lands away to those Muslim Albanians. Stalin did the same to our Armenian lands. Fight, this is the time to resist what can be inevitable if you let it. This is all Turkey and US secret deal, that you have to go through this struggle.

What about the Catholic Albanians? Let's not forget the largest Cathedral in the Balkans in currently under construction by Albanians in Prishtina.
How about you leave religion out of it and stop spreading your own propaganda.
Serbs in northern Kosovo attacked Austrian and German soldiers today and this will not be tolerated in Europe!

These Soldiers you talk about are breaking the UN resolution. This will be the end of the UN when KFOR take sides which is in contradiciton to their mandate. Catholic Albanians live freely in Northern Serbia and are not discriminated against so stop spreading your own Kosovan propaganda and misinformation.

@Deano

Not true.

Enabling freedom of movement and enforcing rule of law by clearing illegally-placed road blocks is not choosing sides.

And using non-lethal force to defend the well-being of your own soldiers who are being attacked by protestors is also not in violation of any international agreements or resolutions.

Don't forget that the Serb protestors actually drove trucks into the soldiers (last week) and were using explosives and Molotov cocktails yesterday. Unfortunately they are escalating the violence, and the NATO decision-makers have now stated they will use live ammunition to protect their soldiers (who are only attempting to clear road-blocks to enable freedom of movement and enforce the rule of law).

Everything is rooted with religion or culture (especially these land claims), whether you want to believe it or not, and those that say "it don't" are stupid enough to close their eyes and shut their ears on the truth. If one's enemy see it through religion you are forced to do the same. About KFOR forces being attacked, they are there because their gov't sent them there, Serbs would of attacked them even if they were Serbs doing the KFOR job. Largest what being built, its all a real life PR move on the Albanian side with false advertisement.
Those people that close their eyes on the history or past are idiots that live in the present not knowing why and how they are in the present they are in. Just like this line going from past to present............leads to ... shit the world is in deep sh*t and its getting deeper...

Serbs built your own future and not the one that is being pushed onto your people, stay strong and fight for whats your, and god bless all you out there Serbs, Albanians and KFOR forces.

You have to do some evil to afford to live as a good human being, those that don't live by those temporary ideals in the time of hardship don't get to live at all.

So typical of an Austrian to respond in this way, using freedom of movement as an excuse when it that very term your countrymen are preventing Serbs to do within their own soveriegn country. FYI..We (SERBS) kicked your pathetic Austrian butts in history and you want payback. Your mob are no better than the Nazi occupiers back through history. The only question your lot should be asking themselves is do they really want their sons/daughters to die at the hands of the Serbs again whilst occupying out nation. You invade our nation and want rights to defend yourselves. Tell your story to some brainwashed western ipod kid. You should be greatful to the Serbs for saving Europe and your Austro-Hungarian soles from becoming a turkish empire, yet you choose to be a part of the corporate western nazi movement. We are fighting for our freedom and will remain until the last man is standing so bring it on.

What are Germans and Austrians doing in Serbia? Continuing what their fathers did
not finish in 20.century. I was thinking that they will never be back. How wrong!

it says those "injured" NATO soldiers are Germans. Germans are back doing it again, as they did during WWII - ally themselves with Nazi Muslims against Christian Serbs. This time the US government is on the side of Nazis - Germans and Muslims. Serbs survived hundreds of centuries of murder and religious persecution from Turks, the allies of US government. Serbs will survive again. It is the Nazis who will expire

Today's Germany is so far distanced from national socialism, that is now one of Europe's most liberal and free countries which loudly opposes racism and ethnic hatred wherever it occurs.

Question: How many gay-rights parades occur in Belgrade each year without violence? How many in Berlin?

To compare the liberal, modern German culture with that of the nationalistic, ethnocentric Serbian culture of today is shameful.

The Germans and Austrians are in Kosovo to promote freedom of movement and to allow the independent nation of Kosovo (recognized by the vast majority of EU nations) to operate within its own borders.

And don't forget that Serbians are far more religious and intolerant than their Albanian counterparts. Most Albanians are secular, though many Muslim names remain from times of Turkish dominance, there is also a great respect for the Catholic faith in Kosovo.

Have you seen the new Cathedral in Prishtina? How many Catholic cathedrals were built in Serbia this year?

I would say there is far more tolerance for different ethnicities and religious faiths in Kosovo than in the nationalistic orthodox Serbian nation.

You seem to have missed the present scandal about the neo-nazi group in Eastern Germany that over the last decade killed probably at least 9 people and seemed to be protected by the establishment.

As for the tolerance in Kosovo: have a look at its cities. They are nearly mono-ethnic Albanian. Serbs nowadays live in the relative safety of mono-ethnic enclaves and many Roma - who used to be city dwellers - have left for Serbia or elsewhere.

Question: How many Germans want the parade? How many Serbs does? Democrasy is so far away from freedom that it's appaling to even conect it. Choose your dictator.!

Serbs are the most socialy developed people on this planet, now that Lybia is destroyed and Im guessing wont reconstruct for a centrury after the terrorism they suffered from NATO.

How much money does Germany make on blood of other people, inocent people? How many more Serbs must die for your propaganda and lies to become "truth"?

How many of us do you have to kill so that we can be "free"?

I;ll come to your house and say it's mine,a strong man will support me and it will become mine, you'll try to fight the strong men and I'll go around saying to neighbors that you're the bad guy,not him or me. That's the description of what Serbs are suffering in their holly land Kosovo. Always Serbian land untill WW2 and the 90s cleansing in wich,in totall, one million were "cleansed" and 200 000 civilians killed by Albanians and Germans.

Another question: When can we Serbs espect an apology for the Kragujevac genocide in wich you put children in line and shoot them along with the teachers that refused to leave the kids to die alone? 5 000 of them killed, dragged out out of schools in you nazi "100 Serbs for one German soldier" politics? It's been 50 years and you still refuse to answer,so it is obvious that pro-nazism is still alive in Germany.

@ Wim:
Holland has Gert Wilders, and many incidents of neo-Nazi violence. Germany and most other nations also have radical minorities. That does not undermine the fact that the governments of these nations have taken much greater strides toward ensuring a safe and prosperous existence for ALL of their residents than the Serbian government. In Serbia, the story is different. Politicians fear for their careers, and sometimes for their lives, when they wish to make progressive statements. Just ask enough academics, artists, scientists or musicians from Belgrade about whether their opinions are represented by the nationalist rhetoric.

The point remains that the violence against the NATO and KFOR soldiers who were attempting to remove road blocks is unacceptable.

@ SerbNik:
"Serbs are the most socialy developed people on this planet, now that Lybia is destroyed "

Ok.

"Serbs are suffering in their holly land Kosovo"

Again with your religion. Why must it be about religion? Aren't your ethnic differences enough? Your bishops have done much more to inflame violence in the Balkans than any Catholic or Muslim clergy (e.g. blessing the Scorpion commandos before their inhumane execution mission in Bosnia).

Our bishops never did anything violent since we don't have bishops - just shows that you don't know anything about our religion. It's about religion since Kosovo is historicly a land sinked with Serbian noble blood after the Kosovo battle in 1389.

Why must you atheists always insult religion on baseless lies? BNeaither Croat chatolics nore Bosnian moslems started any coflict from a church or a mosque. Serb too. The war started for politics and religion, under communism, was forbiden so why don't you ask your mirror reflection to why yourown idology kills?

Both orthodox priests and moslem hodzas have done much to help people in rural battle grounds where hospitals were too far away. All USA- NATO did is blame one side and support another to such a degree that even Serb victims are demonised to never get justice what so ever!

I ask again, how long do we need to wait for the Kragujevac genocide apology from Germans?

To the warring NATO leaders and ignorant, high on drugs UN officials and uneducated managers sitting safely in Belgrade armchairs smoking like hell and drinking tons of coffee, thinking of their EUR and US$ sallaries: Kosovo is still part of the Serbian territory, the main religion in Serbia, and for the Serbs in Kosovo is Christian Orthodox religion. There are a number of Orthodox churches in Kosovo which have suffered sacrilege by criminal Albanians headquartered in Pristina. Yes, there are Catholic churces and graveyards in Serbia. This is an old Christian country, not a country in the making. The Muslims have been more than tolerated in former Yugoslavia and in Serbia. Also, we are proud to be a traditional, family oriented society, not a bunch of gay population. The actual message to the anti-Serbs and pro criminal Albanians in Kosovo is ... of a very profane nature.

Barricades are a desperate measure by oppressed people who have endured more than a decade of oppression, murder, and despair, and received no protection from anywhere. Let us remind ourselves that the Serbs on barricades in Kosovo and Metohija are defending their bare lives and their own ancestral homes. All what they struggle for is to remain in their homes and in their country of birth, which is Serbia. They resist so-called self-proclaimed Albanian independent Kosovo, which is by all indications ruled entirely by Albanian bandits, who are accused of murders, crimes against humanity, organ harvesting... How can anyone possibly trust the bandit government of so-called independent Kosovo when they have murdered over 1000 Serbs since the arrival of NATO soldiers and expelled all the surviving Serbs and Roma population (entire population of Serbs and Roma, some 60,000 people, were expelled from the capital city of Pristina alone), often at gun point? Even Albanian population in Kosovo knows and widely agrees that their “leadership” is in fact a gang of criminals. Why does the Western Europeans need soldiers to subjugate the Serbs and force them to live in a country that they obviously do not want to live in and cannot survive in?

For their resistance, the Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija deserve medals as true patriots of Serbia, just as Charles de Gaulle or Margaret Thatcher deserved for their patriotism in France and the UK, respectively. However, the current Serbian regime is unable, and on occasions, appears to be disinterested in protecting its own citizens who are by all accounts in a desperate need of protection. The Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija currently get treated in the same fashion as they were treated by Hitler's third Reich during the WWII. Today, 66 years after the end of WWII, the German and Austrian soldiers carry on gassing the Serbs in their villages, on their roads, putting the Serbs in barbed wire, firing live and rubber ammunition at civilian protestors.... And all this only because they do not recognize so-called Albanian self-declared independent Kosovo, which by the way have not been recognized by more than 120 countries, including Russia, China, India, Brazil, Spain…,although it has received full support of the West.

Sadly, this kind of behaviour by the German and Austrian soldiers in Serbia was seen many years ago, and then it ended in a disaster for the entire Europe. For that reason I ask the German and Austrian soldiers, in particular, to refuse any orders to gas the Serb civilians, and to stop firing live or rubber ammunition at civilian protesters.

No, you are wrong - Croats from Croatia, Muslims from Bosnia, German Turks, English, Scotish, catalans, Basques from Spain, Muslimsfrom France, etc. would not know anything about "this kind of stuff", as they have not been fired at, or put in barbed wire or gassed, as the Serbs civilian protesters from Kosovo have been, by German/Austrian soldiers. And their (that is the Serbs from Kosvo) only fault is that they are struggling to remain in their country of birth, which happens to be Serbia, and they reject self-proclamed Albanian independent Kosovo organs (more precisely, human organ harvesting from non-Albanian captives, executed and supervised by standing Prime Minister of Kosovo, Mr Tachi - as accussed by a well-respected Swiss parlamentarian).

That is why I appeal to German and Austrian soldiers, in particular, but not exclusively, to stop firing rubber or live ammunitions at civilian protestors in Kosovo.

Germans are cleary back to their old ways - rebuilding WWII aliances with Nazi Muslims and Croats and killing Christian Serbs. I have been in Germany many times and I can testify Germans did not learn anything from WWII, most of them secretely long for Nazi past and despite culture of political correctness imposed on Germany by US, inside Germans are deep Nazis. Given a chance Germany will repeat autrocities of WWII even on a larger scale. Surprisingly but most Nazi-like parties in Germany are not right-wing "neo-xxx" but Greens and Liberal democrats. Those were especially enthusiastic about killing Christian Serbs and supporting Muslim mobs in Kosovo and Bosnia. Germany was the first counry to enthusiastically recognize illegal "independence" of Kosovo which is controlled by drug-and-human organ trafficing bandits from "Kosovo Liberation Army". Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, and ultimately Russians have to start prepararing again for war with Germany.
