Russian President Vladimir Putin has put fresh pressure on firms and government agencies involved in preparations for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, demanding that they stick to their previously agreed commitments and not try to run up costs.

Putin spoke on May 11 as he chaired a meeting of Olympic organizers in the Black Sea resort city.

Putin warned that the government would use all legal means to hold companies involved in the Sochi preparations to their scheduling and budgetary commitments.

Concerns have been raised about whether construction of the Sochi facilities is being completed on schedule and whether firms are inflating costs as they finish their work.

The total budget for the Sochi Olympics is $6.5 billion, with about half coming from the Russian state and half from commercial initiatives.

Based on reporting by Interfax, ITAR-TASS, and AP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
