Shooting Reported Near Kyiv's Maidan

Police in the Ukrainian capital are reported to have detained a suspect in a shooting incident not far from Kyiv's Independence Square.

According to local reports, three people were wounded in the shooting in the evening on March 31, including a senior official in the mayor's office, Bogdan Dubass.

The suspect is reported to be a member of the far-right nationalist Right Sector movement.

It is unclear what sparked the incident.

The shooting took place about 100 meters from Independence Square, the focal point of a four-month revolt that forced former President Viktor Yanukovych to flee the country.

It is still home to hundreds of protesters camped there.

Eyewitnesses said police had earlier taken up positions outside a hotel some 50 meters away, apparently believing the suspect had taken refuge there.
