Kyrgyz National Pleads Not Guilty To Hampering Boston Bombing Probe

A Kyrgyz citizen has pleaded not guilty to charges of hampering the investigation into the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

Khairullozhon Matanov, 23, is described by prosecutors as a friend of two ethnic Chechen brothers,Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, both suspected of the Boston bombing that killed three and injured 260 people.

Matanov is accused of lying to prosecutors and deleting computer files.

The judge at the June 4 indictment hearing ordered him held until trial. Matanov waived his right to seek bail, because he has no family in the U.S. and no place to live if he were released.

Three other men, including two Kazakh nationals, face criminal charges for hampering the investigation.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 20, is in prison awaiting trial on charges that carry the threat of execution if he is convicted. Tamerlan, 26, died after a gunfight with police.
