Kyrgyz Security Forces Capture Militant

TEXT SIZE - +
Kyrgyzstan's State National Security Committee (SNSC) says its forces have captured a member of the Zhayshul Mahdi (Army of the Righteous Ruler) terrorist group.

Daniyar Kadyraliyev was detained in a security operation in a Bishkek neighborhood.

The SNSC said on February 10 that a search uncovered a Kalashnikov rifle, ammunition and a homemade explosive.

Kadyraliyev is the first member of the group to be arrested since last September.

Kyrgyz authorities blame Zhayshul Mahdi for bombings in 2010 outside a Bishkek synagogue and the city's Sports Palace as well as a failed attempt to explode a vehicle packed with explosives outside a Bishkek police station.

In January 2011, Zhayshul Mahdi militants, all ethnic Kyrgyz, according to the SNSC, killed four law enforcement officers in the Bishkek area in gun battles.

Zhayshul Mahdi is inspired by Said Buryatsky, a Russian who converted to Islam and was killed in Ingushetia in March 2010.
