Another Kyrgyz Jail Escapee Recaptured

BISHKEK -- Kyrgyz authorities say police have recaptured a convict, who remained at large after a recent mass jail break.

The state service monitoring prisons told RFE/RL that Edil Abdyrakhmanov was detained after a firefight in a village on the outskirts of the capital, Bishkek, on October 22.

An Interior Ministry spokesman said Abdyrakhmanov had barricaded himself inside a building with a man and a woman who were aiding him.

He said no casualties had been reported.

Abdyrakhmanov, 29, was among nine prisoners who broke out of a prison in Kyrgyzstan's north on October 12, killing four guards. He was serving a life sentence for murder and terrorism.

Officials say four of the fugitives were convicted of religious extremism and terrorism and that two of them had been serving life sentences.

Abdyrakhmanov is the sixth escapee whom the police have managed to catch.

Officials said on October 21 that three of the recaptured convicts died of heart attacks and brain hemorrhage while in custody.

Two fugitives were killed in the search operation and one remains at large.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
