Kyrgyzstan Asks Britain To Extradite Ex-President's Son


Kyrgyzstan has pressed Britain to extradite former President Kurmanbek Bakiev's son, who was sentenced in absentia to 25 years in jail for corruption.

Kyrgyz media reported that the country's requent for Maksim Bakiev's extradition was discussed during Kyrgyz Prosecutor General Aida Salyanova's meeting with Edward Faulks, a British deputy justice minister, on October 10.

A Kyrgyz court opened a separate in absentia trial of Maksim Bakiev and two former associates in September on financial misdeeds and fraud charges.

They are accused of embezzling money from state social funds through illegal banking operations during Kurmanbek Bakiev's presidency.

Bakiev fled Kyrgyzstan after his father was toppled amid violent protests in 2010. He lives in London.

Kurmanbek Bakiev and some of his family members have been residing in Belarus.
