A court in Bishkek has sentenced former President Kurmanbek Bakiev and members of his family to lengthy sentences in absentia for plotting to kill a foreign businessman.

Late on April 4, the court sentenced Bakiev to 25 years in prison with confiscation of property.

Bakiev's brother Janysh, who was head of state security, was sentenced to life in prison.

Bakiev's son Marat received 20 years, another son, Maksim, was sentenced to life in prison with confiscation of property.

The four were convicted of plotting to kill British businessman Sean Daily of Oxus Gold, which owned the license to the Jeruy gold mine in Talas Province.

In the midst of a legal battle between Oxus and the Kyrgyz government over ownership of the mine, Dailey was shot outside his residence. He survived but left the country.
