The son of former Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiev has been sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment for embezzling millions of dollars of state funds.
The Kyrgyz Supreme Court said Maksim Bakiev, who is currently living in Britain, was sentenced after being found guilty of diverting state funds from the Asia Universal Bank (AUB).
The court said Bakiev, his financial adviser Yevgeny Gurevich, and AUB chairman Mikhail Nadel were guilty of diverting 2 billion soms ($40 million) from the country's social fund.
Gurevich and Nadel were sentenced in absentia to 25 years in jail and had their property confiscated.
Maksim Bakiev and Gurevich are also suspects in a criminal case of fraud and obstruction of justice in the United States.
Additionally, Maksim Bakiev was found guilty in March 2013 of corruption and sentenced.
Kurmanbek Bakiev, who lives in Belarus, was ousted in 2010.
