JALAL-ABAD, Kyrgyzstan -- An investigation has been launched into the collapse of a building that housed a mosque and a madrasah in Kyrgyzstan's southern region of Jalal-Abat.
The chief of police in the Suzak District, Nurlan Janybekov, told RFE/RL on February 4 that investigators are looking into possible violations of construction safety regulations.
The second floor of the Imam Azim Mosque in the village of Kumush collapsed on February 3 during a memorial service for a local imam who died recently.
Fifty-three people were rushed to hospital, eight of whom remain hospitalized.
The building had recently been constructed.
