BISHKEK -- Kyrgyz President Roza Otunbaeva replaced the controversial chief of the Kabar National News Agency today, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Presidential spokesman Sultan Kanazarov told RFE/RL that Kabar chief Jyrgalbek Turdukojoev had accepted another job and would therefore be replaced by Kuban Abdymen.

Turdukojoev's new position was not announced.

On January 21, Kabar employees said it was "impossible to work" with Turdukojoev and held a strike demanding that he be replaced.

The striking journalists sent open letters to the president, prime minister, and the parliament demanding Turdukojoev be sacked.

Turdukojoev told RFE/RL last week that charges by the journalists that he is a poor manager are baseless.

Abdymen was the head of Kabar from 2000 to 2006. He was the chief of the government's Department for Information Policies before today's presidential decree was issued on his new post at Kabar.
