Special Forces Dispatched To Kyrgyz Prison After Unrest

Media reports say special security forces have raided a detention facility in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, after unrest broke out at the prison.

Kyrgyz Ombudsman Tursunbek Akun, who visited the detention facility, told RFE/RL that inmates were severely beaten by security forces.

Kyrgyz media quoted him as saying that some 30 inmates were injured.

Media reports said the inmates were protesting the transfer of two inmates to another detention facility. Security forces reportedly closed off the area around the prison.

Officials said four soldiers were injured during a previously announced raid for illegal drugs and weapons.

Unconfirmed media reports said inmates at several other detention facilities across the country began a hunger strike in solidarity with the protest at the Bishkek prison.
