Russia Says Against EU "Attempts" To Make Serbia Join Sanctions

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Aleksandr Lukashevich says Moscow is against what he called "attempts by the European Union" to make Serbia join sanctions against Russia.

Lukashevich said in Moscow on November 20 that "the methods used by our European colleagues to persuade and force other countries to join sanctions against Russia are unacceptable."

A European Commission report on enlargement said on October 8 that Belgrade's refusal to follow the EU’s lead on sanctions could cause problems for Belgrade’s membership bid.

But EU Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Commissioner Johannes Hahn told reporters November 18 "there is no linkage."

Hahn spoke at a press conference in Brussels with Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dacic.

Dacic said Brussels had made no explicit request to Belgrade to impose sanctions against Russia.

Based on reporting by ria.ru, TASS, Reuters, and inserbia.info

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
