Macedonia's interior and transport ministers as well as the country's intelligence chief have resigned.

The AFP news agency quoted an unidentified government spokesman on May 12 as saying Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski accepted the resignations of Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska, Transport Minister Mile Janakieski, and DBK director Saso Mijalkov.

The state news agency MIA reported that Gruevski proposed to parliament the election of new interior and transport ministers. It also reported that Mijalkov, Gruevski's cousin, had resigned.

The developments come days before a planned mass rally led by opposition leader Zoran Zaev to demand Gruevski's resignation.

Zaev has accused Gruevski of tapping the phones of 20,000 people, including police, judges, and journalists.

It also follows a weekend gunbattle in the northern town of Kumanovo that left eight police officers and 14 suspected gunmen dead. The fighting was the worst violence in Macedonia since its 2001 interethnic conflict.
