The interior minister of the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia has condemned a recent wave of ethnically motivated violence, including a series of attacks this week that left nearly a dozen people injured.

Speaking on March 9 in a report to parliament, Gordana Jankulovska said the ministry had appealed for calm following repeated clashes between the country's ethnic Macedonian and Albanian communities.

"The Interior Ministry has made a strong appeal for tensions to be reduced," Jankulovska said. "We ask all political factions to do their best to help us to overcome this situation."

The authorities say at least 10 people were injured in a number of overnight attacks on March 7, with groups of youths hurling stones at buses and using baseball bats to beat passengers. The ethnic identity of the attackers and the victims was not clear.

Jankulovska said a total of 38 people had been injured in clashes since the beginning of the year.

Ermira Mehmeti, the head of the parliamentary committee on interethnic relations, said on March 9 it was crucial to address the tensions before they got worse.

"Good interethnic relations and coexistence are the priorities of this state," Mehmeti said. "Therefore, there is need for a discussion about these events and their impact and influence on interethnic and interreligious relations in the Republic of Macedonia."

Ethnic Albanians are believed to make up one-fourth of Macedonia's population of 2 million.

Relations between Albanians and the Macedonian majority remain scarred by a 2001 government offensive aimed at crushing an ethnic Albanian insurgency.

Ralf Breth, the head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation's Skopje mission, on March 9 called on the authorities to fully investigate the incidents and said violence was unacceptable "in a sensitive multiethnic environment."

The U.S. Embassy has condemned the latest violence.

A Macedonian analyst, speaking to RFE/RL, expressed fear the renewed tensions meant the country was "approaching an abyss."

Return to yugoslavia? doesn't exist, you silly idiots, Albanians have always been a majority there, it's only during the 70s and 80s that the serb government started migrating serbs to macedonia to make up numbers, learn history

Except for the point that Yugoslavia doesn't exist, historywise MEE is a complete ignoramus, incoming with dangerous facts distortion. Albaninas have always been a majority only in Albania. Proposing that in the 70s and 80s the Serbian government started migrating Serbs to Macedonia is preposterous - and besides you're talking about the time of one country Yugoslavia - not about six separate states. Also, people could move out of their own free will all over Yugoslavia. They could have had a permanent residence in one city, could have been born in a remote village, and could have had a vacation house at the seaside or a cottage in the mountains. When are the Albanians going to learn about the history of their country of origin - Albania (which has never had Kosovo (Serbia) or Macedonia or Greece as its integral part).

Frankly, George, most probably some 70-80 per cent of the population of Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro etc would gladly go back to the Yugoslavia the way it existed under Communist TITO, but - as MEE from London - is rightly pointing out it is (unfortunately) does not (any more/yet) exist.

And how Big (or Great) the "Great Albania" will be ? The size of the entire Balkans or Former Yugoslavia at least ? -:) FYI, I am not sure if its a joke (you didn't indicate it with smiley like this "-:)"). If it's joke, that's just a joke. If you really believe what you say, than imagine how "Great" life will be for Albanians in "Great Albania" under the leadership of the likes like Hashim Thaci and his Jihadist and narco/human organ trafficking and terror practicing Kosovo Liberation Army.

Would be interesting to know who is really interested in destabilizing Macedonia at this specific point of time when (a) its Northern neighbor SERBIA is preparing to go to the polls in order to throw the traitor Tadic out of the Presidential palace, and (b) its Southern neighbor GREECE is been economically suffocating by the Germans and is also (kind of) preparing to go to the polls in May to vote on the EU-imposed financial genocide. Pretty much looks like a comprehensive plan of regional destabilization with a possible NATO intervention in Macedonia to scare Serbs and Greeks into submission to NATO and EU.

Вy the way..
How many Albanians in France?
Mr Sarkozy is not going to separate
from France а piece of territory, where there will be a new European statе-The Albanian Courchevel for example?
As they did in Serbia, claiming that no other way..

Well, the list goes on:
Albanian London
Albanian Washington, DC
Albanian Earth-in case of humanoids arrive from Alpha Centauri..

Europeans had a head (not butt) to think when Bush and Wright decided the laws of Texas apply in Europe..
Although in the head of Merkel- gas inflated by Putin
Sarkozy brains permanently disconnected as soon as Bruni has appeared
We hope that Mr.Whitmore keeps himself in his hands and will resist the expansion of the Albanian and European policy-makers with broken brains...
