Outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has named Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin as his envoy to the breakaway Moldovan region of Transdniester.

The staunchly nationalist Rogozin currently oversees the military-industrial complex in the cabinet of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, and in February Medvedev named him to head Moscow's negotiations with NATO over missile-defense in Europe.

From 2008 until 2011, he served as Russia's ambassador to NATO.

Earlier, he negotiated with the European Union concerning issues involving the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad as the Baltic states joined the bloc.

Presidential press secretary Natalya Timakova said Rogozin's experience in international talks was important because the situation in Transdniester is "not simple."

Transdniester declared its independence from Moldova in 1990 and the situation there has been regulated by a cease-fire agreement reached in 1992.
