Moldovan Speaker In Brussels For Meeting On EU Accord

The speaker of Moldova’s parliament, Igor Corman, was due to participate on November 13 in a European Parliament meeting in Brussels about Moldova’s European Union Association Agreement.

The European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs approved the ratification of the Moldova-EU accord on October 16.

The Association Agreement, signed by Moldova in June, requires ratification by the parliaments of all EU member states.

Moldova, a former Soviet republic bordering Ukraine, is being courted by both the EU and Russia.

On November 12, Moldova extended a gas-supply contract with Russia's Gazprom for another year.

The contract was signed in December 2006 and expired in 2011, but has repeatedly been extended.

But Moldova also is seeking energy sources in Europe to reduce its dependence on Russia's Gazprom.

It is developing a pipeline to import natural gas from Romania.
