CHISINAU -- Moldova's prime minister-designate says the country's new parliament will be able to elect a president and break a constitutional crisis in the country, RFE/RL's Moldovan Service reports.
Vlad Filat, whose Alliance for European Integration (AIE) won the November elections, told RFE/RL that the pro-Western coalition could offer the opposition Communist Party one portfolio in the new cabinet in exchange for the votes needed to elect a president.
Filat did not say which job could go to the Communists -- who remain the country's single-most-powerful party -- and it was unclear whether Filat's partners in the AIE will agree to that offer.
The AIE, a three-party alliance, needs two votes in parliament from the Communist Party to reach the three-fifths threshold of 61 votes needed to elect a president.
Previous AIE attempts to get votes from the Communists have failed, ushering in November's early elections.
A referendum to change the rules and allow Moldovans to elect the president through a popular vote failed in September due to low turnout.
But Filat told said his alliance "has the means to break the deadlock" and that this time "the atmosphere in parliament" is different, hinting that the Communists might help the government elect a head of state.
The Communist Party, led by former President Vladimir Voronin, has not commented on Filat's remarks.
