A Few Things Not To Say If You're Serbia's President-Elect (Updated)

"There are dreams a man cannot fulfill," says Serbian President-elect Tomislav Nikolic.
"There are dreams a man cannot fulfill," says Serbian President-elect Tomislav Nikolic.
It's an inauspicious way to begin a presidency, by anyone's measure.
Even before his inauguration as Serbia's new president on May 31, Tomislav Nikolic has already offended the government in neighboring Croatia and raised a few red flags in Georgia.

In an interview with German journalist Michael Martens in the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung," Nikolic said that a "Greater Serbia" was his "unrealized dream" and called the eastern Croatian city of Vukovar a "Serbian town" and said Croats had no reason to go back there.

"There are dreams a man cannot fulfill. Croatia is an internationally recognized state. Croatian borders are on the Danube and there will be no changes of the borders. The same applies to Bosnia and Herzegovina. My dreams, from the time when Yugoslavia collapsed and decisions were made about who would live where, unfortunately were not realized. And, as things stand, they will never be realized."
Responded Croatian President Ivo Josipovic: "If Mr. Nikolic's statement means a return to the ideas of the '90s, I can say in the name of all Croatian citizens that those ideas will not be realized."
Josipovic said cooperation between the two states would be possible only if Nikolic "changes his attitude."
Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic called Nikolic's statements "shocking and absolutely unacceptable."

"If Croatia and Serbia want to do good for their citizens, they have to be able to cooperate," Pusic said. "But for that, willingness from both sides is necessary."

Croatia's war veterans minister, Predrag Matic, a Vukovar war veteran and former prisoner of war himself, took a different tack.

"I agree with Nikolic that there are some dreams that will never come true," he said. "I also dreamt about Claudia Schiffer, but I realized that those dreams would not come to pass."

For his part, Nikolic denied making the comments at all. A statement issued by his office and quoted by the Serbian news agency Tanjug called the reports a "treacherous lie. The policy of Tomislav Nikolic will be to build peace and stability in the region."

German journalist Martens, however, reportedly provided an audio recording of the interview.

As if that all weren't enough, Nikolic ruffled feathers in Georgia with his comments to Voice of Russia on May 26 that raised that possibility that Belgrade might join Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and a couple of Pacific island countries in recognizing the independence of Georgia's two breakaway regions, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Nikolic dismissed any similarities between Kosovo and the two breakaway states, saying that "Kosovo should be under the control of Belgrade, while the two separatist states deserve independence."

Nikolic's comments came during a visit to Moscow, during which President Vladimir Putin promised to release $800 million in loans to Serbia for infrastructure projects.

The comments sparked a muted response from Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze, who cited the Georgian and Serbian people’s "close relations" while saying:

"Georgia, like Serbians, have chosen a European way, both seeking EU membership. It’s clear to everyone that the EU clearly recognizes Georgia’s territorial integrity and Georgia’s borders within international law frames. Accordingly, it is in Serbia’s national interest to follow international standards."

Nikolic has said that Serbia will not give up its claim to Kosovo for the sake of EU membership.

UPDATE: In an interview with Montenegrin television on May 29, Nikolic got himself into more hot water when he said: "I recognize Montenegro's existence forever, but I do not recognize the difference between Serbs and Montenegrins."

From the above RFE/RL anti-Serb propaganda screed:

"The German journalist Martens, however, reportedly provided an audio recording of the interview."

"Reportedly", as in not fully substantiating that such a quote has been clearly established.

Meantime, Saaki has previously parroted anti-Serb propaganda about ethnic cleansing, with some highly laced Croats having gone to a pro-Ustasha musician's concert - items not highlighted by RFE/RL.

Your headline is very telling, i.e. "A Few Things NOT To Say If You're Serbia's President-Elect". It's more than obvious, over and over again, that the West's allies in the region are well choreographed and can say whatever they please, circumventing the truth to suit propaganda purposes. As for Serbia's leaders, ... well ... they must dance to the West's tune or Serbia gets bombed by NATO ... 1999. The problem is that the West (mainly USA-NATO) completely disregard the WWII history of the region, which led directly to the horrific events of the 1990s. The West's constant meddling does not help matters, only exacerbates them. Keep that in mind.

It is absolutely clear that the Nicoliс mentioned Abkhazia and South Ossetia, because Putin when signed the decree on credit to Serbs,"humbly" asked the (Nikolic) Serbs to recognize these bandit formations.

I remind you Ladies and Gentlemen, that none of the quasi states did not recognize abkhazian and ossetian bandits for the conviction, but did so for bribes that Putin had given to them.

Remember, Mr.Nikolic, that the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia is tantamount to the absolute rightness of Hitler and the Holocaust justify because the abkhaz and ossetian bandits living on the territory that does not belong o them they killed thousands of women and children, and practiced racism and Nazism.

Hey, Vakhtang, welcome back to this "marvelous" web-site - and I hope your absence was not conditioned by the fact that you were too busy following the Eurovision "songs" contest in Baku :-))).
At any rate, you see: the RFE/RL has spent months/years promoting regime change in Russia, Syria, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba and the DPRK - and what they got was the regime change in Serbia, another one coming the next month in Greece and the election of a new Socialist President in France who is taking the French troops out of Afghanistan by the end of the year.
As far as the specific case of Nikolic finally winning the presidential election in Serbia is concerned, this is just the first step in the coming huge geostratigic change in the entire Balkan peninsula. It is EXCLUSIVELY a result of the comlete failure on the part of the EU to offer people inside (and outside) of its borders any kind of economic perspective. And you, Vakhtang, know better than anyone else - from the experience of the collapse of the USSR in 1991 - that once one power retreats from a given territory, other ones come to take its place. And this is what we will see happening in the Balkans in the years to come.
As far as Abkhazia is concerned, you know very well that this topic is just one of the smaller cards in the global geostrategic game and that Georgia has no chance whatsoever of winning anything in this game at all.

Hi Eugenio,

"one power retreats from a given territory, other ones come to take its place". You comment has me intrigued. Which power do you think might take the EU's place - is the Russian Bear playing a long-term chess game?

My best wishes to you Eugenio...

I just studied the question of how Peter the Great changed on the nails the ancestors of Buranovskie grannies ..

Abkhazia and South Ossetia is a special case..
It is well known that Russia's recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, is Putin's personal decision...From the very beginning, it was obvious that this is an extremely unpopular decision around the world.
No country in Europe, including the former Soviet republic is not recognized аbkhazian and оssetian bandits.
It is clear that this was a blow to Putin, a blow to his reputation.
Since then, he with perseverance of a maniac to seek out countries around the world which for money or weapons might have to recognize abkhazian and ossetian bandits, racists, looters...
Here we must mention, that today, for example in Abkhazia Russian discriminate, raped and murdered, but Putin is turning a blind eye...
Obviously, he a dangerous man who for the sake of personal ambitions is ready allow the murder of thousands of people...

To WILLIAM: Hey, William, yes, obviously, "the Russian Bear is playing a long-term chess game": just take all the maneuvering around the projects of constructing different pipelines in the Balkans (Nabucco vs. South Stream) and count the number of visits that all sorts of Russian officials payed to Serbia and other Balkan countries over the last 5 years.
But of course, Russia is here a secondary player for now. The major factor is the implosion of the EU that we are witnessing in a slow motion right now. Austrian and German newspapers are full of plans of how Greece can be best expelled from the Schengen zone and the Euro-zone "when the time comes". So, it's just obvious that the EU has nothing to offer to its today's members - and those members will end up looking for other partners once the bankruptcy of the EU project becomes clear to everyone.
To VAKHTANG: Hey, Vakhtang, very frankly, I think you are just overestimating the importance of the Abkhazia issue "around the world". Here in Europe there was some publicity around this topic in the Summer-Fall of 2008, but since then everyone has pretty much forgotten about Caucasus. There are maybe one or two articles on the region per year and that's pretty much it.

But I am sure that the Serbs do not recognize Abkhaz criminals, racists and nazis -who are involved in the killing of peaceful Georgian population....

Mr. Nikolic simply said that Putin wants to hear, thought to himself:"The Serbs do not recognize аbkhaz criminals -who are involved in ethnic cleansing and who live in the land does not belong to them....

It's outrageous and disgusting to see such comments from a Georgian expat living in a city of a nation that he supposedly despises. I have seen your idiotic comments here over and over and it's getting tiring reading this same drivel. You can Abkhaz "criminals, racists, and Nazis"? You must be kidding, because your people are quite famous for this xenophobic and immoral attitude and have been so for some time. Do you remember the slogans of Gamsakhudria, a/k/a/ "Georgia for Georgians"? Let's not forget Gia Karkarashvili who went on live national television to proclaim his intent to annihilate the entire Abkhaz nation. And yet another prominent Georgian "politician" in the 90s said the same thing but instead chose to be more graphic and declare that all it took to murder an entire nation of Abkhaz was to ethnically cleanse 15,000 men and boys from Abkhazia (his words, not mine). Your nation funds and supports neo-Nazi camps for schoolchildren where they learn how much better than they from their neighbors and that the glorious nation of Georgia is the "pearl" of the Caucasus. I can go on but you know all this better than I, and now hopefully some of the readers of this article. The only crimes Abkhaz ever committed was to (according to filth like you) defend themselves against Georgian drug addicts, paid mercenaries, and other vermin that sought to take ABKHAZIAN land from ABKHAZIAN people. Not sure if I really follow your logic that ABKHAZIA belongs to Georgian people and not to ABKHAZIANS themselves. Moving on...your racism and disgusting attitude disturbs me and it's even worse than your trash is allowed to be displayed here in all its (pitiful) glory.

Where did you read that Putin asked Serbia to recognize South Ossetia and Abkhazia? I'm curious because I haven't heard it, but it sounds like the sort of "favors" that led the small Pacific countries to recognize them.

I'll honestly be a little surprised if Nikolic decides to recognize either Abkhazia or S. Ossetia. To my knowledge, I don't think Georgia has recognized Kosovo, and these things usually happen 'tit for tat.'

"Where did you read that Putin asked Serbia to recognize South Ossetia and Abkhazia? "
-----------------------------Brian from Ohio...

"poor" Putin is generally has nothing to do with it..including:
arrest of Mikhail Khodorkovsky
аrrest of Pussy Riot
awarded the orders of those who killed Magnitsky
deportation of Georgian children from Russian kindergartens and schools..
murder of Litvinenko in London..

Why would Mr. Nikolic keeping in mind the thought about Kosovo, suddenly took care of abkhazians and ossetians bandits?
When he was born, he probably began immediately to think how he can as quickly as possible to recognize abkhazian and ossetian bandits and racists

A few things that maybe he decided to say:

- my first trip will be to Moscow
- but an EU spokesman will say I'm going to Brussels
- I'll go to Moscow and say, "I need some help"
- When Vova says, I can help but here's what you need to do, I'll say "whatever you say."
- When Vova says, "$800 million," I'll say, "Abkhazia and South Ossetia"

Then I'll say something like, "why is Serbia an international pariah state again?"

I was wondering when will the Croatians come to grips with reality and realize in a civilized fashion that If the Croatian Nazi and anti-Christian led scoundrels have no intention of admitting their aggressors' mistakes from 1990's, apologize to the Serbs and return the property of Serbs (either in land or by monetary compensation) their fragile state with a thousand-year-old dream is liable to crumble to the area of Zagreb.

The scum in the title was specifically the neo-Nazi style Croatians and the anti-Christian ones (anyone claiming that the Roman Catholic religion is above the Orthodox Christianity must surely be insane). There are some Croatians that do not want to face the reality but keep messing up with it.
