Beijing, Almaty Submit Formal Bids For 2022 Winter Games

Beijing and Almaty, the two remaining cities vying to host the 2022 Winter Games, have formally submitted their bid details to Olympic officials in the Swiss city of Lausanne.

With one day to go before deadline, both cities handed over so-called "bid books" with plans for venues, accommodations, transportation, and other projects related to hosting the massive sporting event.

The competition for the 2022 Olympics began with six candidate cities, including winter-sport meccas like Stockholm and Oslo.

But four of the cities eventually dropped out, citing concerns about mounting costs.

Russia, which hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, spent a record $51 billion on its games, which were plagued by allegations of rights abuses and massive corruption.

Officials from the International Olympic Committee will visit the two finalist cities in February and March to assess their bids.

The host city will be announced July 31.
