One Killed As Afghan, Pakistani Border Guards Exchange Fire

Border guards from Afghanistan and Pakistan have exchanged fire across their border, resulting in the death of at least one of the Afghan guards.

The skirmish happened for some two hours early on May 15 along the border of Afghanistan's southern Kandahar Province.

Kandahar provincial police spokesman Zia Durrani said the shooting started when Afghan border guards caught their Pakistani counterparts attempting to set up a checkpoint on Afghan territory in an area where the border is poorly marked.

Durrani said the two sides shot at each other with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

Pakistani police official Asif Yusufzai said Pakistani forces only responded after Afghan border guards attacked them.

Yusufzai said Pakistani forces were building a checkpoint on the Pakistani side of the border when they were attacked.

He did not have any information about casualties.
