Suspect In Murder That Led To Mass Riots In Moscow Pleads Not Guilty

An Azerbaijani citizen suspected in the high-profile stabbing death of a Russian man in Moscow has pleaded not guilty.

Orkhan Zeynalov entered his plea as his trial started at Moscow City Court on June 30.

Zeynalov was arrested several days after the murder of Yegor Shcherbakov on October 10, 2013.

Shcherbakov's death sparked violent antimigrant riots in Moscow's southern Biryulyovo district.

Several migrant workers from Central Asia and the Caucasus were killed across Russia in the days following the incident.

Days after the riots, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed a number of senior Interior Ministry and police officers, including the police chief of the district hit by the unrest.

Azerbaijan has urged Russia to guarantee that Zeynalov's rights are not violated.
