OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovic has demanded that Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka put an end to the repression of media since the disputed December 19 presidential election.

In a letter to Lukashenka, Mijatovic urged the Belarusian government to "protect each and every media worker of Belarus from fear, harassment, legal and administrative persecution, imprisonment, violence, torture in detention facilities, and from closure of their media outlets."

Mijatovic condemned recent violent police actions against journalists on June 29, during which at least 12 journalists were detained or attacked.

I really cannot understand, what President Lukashenko is doing? I thought he was a clever man, I expected him to start changing Belarus in order to increase income some time ago,,, for a start.
A) He should abolish entry visas especially for European passports , this will bring a lot more people in as tourists and of course a lot of foreign currency.
He should also offer incentives for women who have emigrated and married other nationalities so that they can come and visit relatives more often with foreign currency of course.
B} Allow people to demonstrate in peace, keep the police out of the way unless there are real disturbances, then they might accept this small freedom as a victory and be satisfied. Hitting people, bashing journalists, sending out plain clothes security personel to assault innocent people , imprisoning bystanders for 5,10 or 15 days will only make those people hate him more and attempt even greater disruptions. Does he really want to end up like Assad????
C) I understand the difficulties and problems of having an opposition, but imprisonment is not the answer, he is creating martyrs, better to allow them into the government and negitiate a satisfactory agreement that will allow him to remain President while the mixed parties argue between themsleves.
D) There is nothing to stop him having a duty free zone where the surrounding European countries can come shopping, especially if it also includes Belarussian maufactured goods.
E) Businesses, need freedom to thrive, expand and assist the economy, charging people for every action undertaken or police interference in the business or even criminal involvement in collecting insurance money from small business will not help anyone, simply stops people trying to star any busines..
F) Incentives such as limited period free land , say 10 years to outside businesses will encourage foreign manufacturers to set up in Belarus with conditions that they have to employ only belarussian workers except in key positions.
G) Organise his Utilities with serious long term contracts in order to avoid repetition of constant, no gas, no electricity ect...

Finally, Belarrus has the biggest forests in Europe, fill them with animals and birds and organise hunting parties from other countries, Advertise your wonderful Beloviershkaya Pusha with the only Bisons in Europe, offer foreign tourists incetives like free bus and train transport, to the sites, or no Visa if booked in advance in foreign currency, I am sures millions of people will come to visit and possibly spend hundreds of dollars each just to see Bisons. Nobody will do anything, if they have to pay for visas, extortionate prices for hotels, afraid of the police, worried about their personal safety, and more than anything scarred of putting money in a Belarussian bank, when with a good interest rate of only a few percent in the bank and allowing foreigners to use your banks, you could collect millions and simply reinvest this in another country like Russia to earn more foreign currency.
Millions of roubles in paper money is not bad but far better to reduce this useless counting of thousands of roubles by shopkeepers simply to sell a few groceries.
Come on Alexander use you ability, knowhow and power to change things for the good of all in Belarus, the way you are coducting things today will only result sooner or later in your self destruction.
People are no longer stupid or backwater farmers, with the internet and travel they can see the truth no matter how well you try to hide it, better to negotiate early rather than to fight later.
