Pakistani Police Officers Killed In Gunfight

At least three police officers have been killed and six wounded in a gunfight with armed men holed up in a house in northwestern Pakistan.

Senior police official Mian Saeed said police were carrying out a house-to-house search early on September 2 in the village of Urmar Payan on the outskirts of Peshawar when gunmen opened fire.

The attack triggered a gunfight in which one gunman was killed. The other attackers fled the area.

Police later recovered "mortar shells and other explosive material" from the house.

Saeed said it was not yet clear if the gunmen were militants or criminals.

Peshawar suffered the worst terrorist attack in Pakistani history in December 2014, when Taliban militants killed more than 150 people -- most of them children -- at an army-run school.

In February, Taliban militants stormed a Shi’ite mosque, killing 21 people.
