Pakistan: Soldier Killed As Indian Troops Raid Military Post

Pakistan's military says one of its soldiers was killed when Indian troops raided a military post along the de facto border in Kashmir.

Pakistan's military said in a statement that Indian soldiers crossed the Line of Control separating the two countries early on January 6 and "physically raided a post named Sawan Patra."

The statement said Pakistani forces "effectively responded to the attack" but that one Pakistani soldier was killed and another wounded.

The statement said an exchange of fire between the two sides continued.

A spokesman for the Indian Army in Kashmir blamed Pakistani troops for initiating "unprovoked firing," using mortars and automatic weapons that destroyed a civilian home.

Cross-border raids are considered rare in the decades-long fight for control over the mountainous Kashmir region.

The incident took place in the Haji Pir sector of the Line of Control, some 80 kilometers north of Islamabad.
