Pakistan Says 76 Militants Killed In New Air Strikes

Pakistan says air strikes in a restive tribal area along the border with Afghanistan have killed 76 militants.

The military said two rounds of air strikes targeted six militant hideouts on January 27 in the Datta Khel area of North Waziristan.

Officials said some foreigners were among those killed while an ammunition dump and seven explosives-laden vehicles also were destroyed in the strikes.

The Pakistani Army launched an offensive in North Waziristan last June against the Pakistani Taliban and other militant groups, using air strikes, artillery, mortar fire, and ground troops.

More than 1,800 militants have been reported killed in the operation, though those numbers cannot be independently verified.

Pakistan has stepped up operations against the Taliban following a December 16 attack by the Islamic militants on a military-run school in Peshawar that killed 151 people, nearly all of them schoolchildren.

Based on reporting by AFP and AP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
