The U.S. special representative to Pakistan and Afghanistan says peace in the region will depend on whether an "enduring" and "clearly defined" relationship can be established between Washington and Islamabad.

Marc Grossman was speaking in the Pakistani capital during talks with government and army officials.

Grossman said it was important for the two countries to "cooperate closely" to ensure security and prosperity in the restive region.

Pakistani media reported that President Asif Ali Zardari urged Grossman to look for alternatives to U.S. drone strikes targeting suspected militants in Pakistan's tribal regions.

The U.S. CIA drone program is strongly criticized in Pakistan, with many complaining the strikes are imprecise and can kill innocent civilians.
