The United States has called on Pakistan to "break any link they have" with the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani militant network, and to take action to shut down the group's safe havens along the Afghan-Pakistani border.

White House spokesman Jay Carney made the call a day after outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, said the Haqqani network "acts as a veritable arm of Pakistan's [Inter-Services Intelligence] agency."

The Haqqani network is believed to number around 15,000, making it probably the largest force among the Taliban warlords.

Mullen also said it was "with ISI support" that Haqqani operatives attacked the U.S. Embassy in Kabul on September 13 and conducted a September 10 truck bomb attack on a NATO outpost south of the Afghan capital.

Pakistan reacted, saying Washington risks losing an ally if it continues to publicly criticize Islamabad's performance in the war against militancy.

Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar told Geo TV in New York that Washington "cannot afford to alienate the Pakistani people."

I think the Pakistani foreign minister has said the right thing and US shall weigh their statements before going on air. As they the right to defend themselves the others also have the same rights. Pakistan has to assert itself like that and call a spade a spade.

Pakistan is like double headed snake. USA will benifitted if pakistan shows its true face of terrorism. 90% of people in Pakistan are islamic terrorists. Currently ISI is giving safe heaven to Alquada's number 2. ISI and pakistan is giving safe heaven to Davood Ibrahim one of the most notorious terrorists in the world. Its been known that Davood funds terrorist organizations like Alquada, Hurkat, JAE, and many more terrorist organizations.

Hi Farooq, With all due respect - if Pakistan called a spade a spade, they would admit that the ISI is just another way to spell "TALIBAN."

Hi Prague! I think you are mistaken and don't know thw facts. Its not the ISI but CIA who created them and funded them to fight the soviets 30 yrs back. Its them who poke their nose everywhere in every nook and corner of the world.
Pls read the comments by Jack From US and many of the experts on the 9/11 happenings. Everyone has said that it was all a self made drama.

With all due respect why the hell are you helping people who are ungrateful? Did they thank you for your support during the Cold War? No. Lose them. Less NATO crap around the world less wars.

someone needs to ask US government to break with terror network. After all, if it wasn't for US government support for Muslims terrorists in Pakistan&Afghanistan in 80-ies and 90-ies, and in Bosnia and Kosovo in 90-ies
9/11 would not have happened, thousands of American lives would not have been lost, and trillions of dollars would not have been wasted on useless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It was all US government making.

Well said Jack. I agree wth you. One should not poke his nose every where around and respect others liberty viewpoint. May I remind all that its not only a few american lives, just think about the millions others lost in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and many other countries.

This is not a surprise and should not be taken as one. Pakistan is and always has been a terrorist supporting country. We should just shut off all Muslim terrrorist sympathizing countries now and move out and onto a more friendly venue.Further we should keep our nose out of other countries and take care of ourselves. We have made ourselves into the most hated country in the world.

Please view this as a great game ... USA has failed in Afghanistan as others have in the past 800-1000 years. Unfortunately USA is shy of accepting its defeat... CIA also has links with terror outfits across the border and have been using them to de-stablize Pakisatn... There are no friends in international relations only intrest. Why should we be thankful to anyone when all the help was channalized to be pocketed by the might with the conivance of USA itself... Pl answer me any one how a band of mear 5000-1000 ill-equiped and ill-trained haqqanis can pose successful operations with 0.150 million highly trained and very well trained US Army... It is safe to conclude that they cant fight and only finding a escape goat to blame for their failures in Afghanistan. We are on the right patch and we have all the right to pursue our national objectives and our own intrest at any cost.. People die... Nations live ON...
