Panetta Says Iran Could Develop Nuclear Weapon Within A Year

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says analysts believe that Iran could develop a nuclear weapon within about one year if Tehran decided to do so.

Speaking on the CBS “60 Minutes” program broadcast on January 29, Panetta said it would probably take Iran another two to three years to produce a missile or other vehicle that could deliver the weapon to a target.

Panetta's comments came while a team of inspectors from the United Nations' nuclear watchdog agency, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is at work in Iran.

Panetta reiterated that the United States does not want Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. He called this a “red line” for both the U.S. and its ally Israel.

"If they proceed and we get intelligence that they are proceeding with developing a nuclear weapon, then we will take whatever steps are necessary to stop them," he said.

Iran's leadership denies any effort to make a nuclear weapon.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said he was "optimistic" about the mission, which is due to be in Iran until January 31.

"Of course I do not mean that a miracle will happen overnight," Salehi added, "but you know a long journey starts with the first step."

He added that inspectors would be allowed to visit any site in Iran that they wished.

On January 29, Iranian parliament speaker Ali Larijani said the IAEA's visit is a "test" for the agency, adding that Iran would cooperate if the IAEA acted "professionally" and not as "a tool of the West."

An IAEA report in November said some aspects of the Iranian nuclear program could only have military applications.

In his State of the Union address last week, President Barack Obama warned Tehran over its nuclear plans. "Let there be no doubt: America is determined to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, and I will take no options off the table to achieve that goal," Obama said.

A draft analysis by the Institute for Science and International Security quoted by "The Guardian" predicted that Israel would attack Iran in 2012 to derail an alleged nuclear weapons program. The report suggested Iran was "unlikely to dash toward making nuclear weapons as long as its uranium-enrichment capability remains as limited as it is today."

The Irainians and the Americans,
Are both really crazy I'm not sure which side hates life more.
Both sides have been spoilling for this war since the 1970's
I believe that should this war happen It will completely distable the area bring on a larger war in region.
People should be real say Iran has a nuclear weapon what are they going to achieve by using it. It would mean the end of Iran.

Back in the Bush days, we actually had photographs and forged paperwork to support our invented fantasies of Iraqi WMDs. Now we don't even bother. Now the press doesn't even ask how we know that Iran is one year from having a bomb.

Israel is pushing US in another useless and costly war. We will have to face another financial disaster plus loss of numerous american lives. Why follow Israel? Let them fight their war. They have nuclear weapons, so why not Iran a nuclear power? A nuclear Iran will provoke a permanent deterence in the middle east and balance power. This will lead to an independent Palestine, which is suffering while we americans are ignoring their suffering. In every continent, there should be at least 2 or 3 nuclear powers for deterence. Welcome Iran to the club...You are most welcome.....

Agree with your sentiments. Why shouldn't Iran have nuclear weapons? Who made the US the sole arbiter regarding who gets to join the nuclear club? I'm of the opinion that arming most countries with nukes would either lead to greater global peace or help reduce the excess population.

Panetta Says Iran Could Develop Nuclear Weapon Within A Year ...
Are you serious Mr. Panetta?? I've already heard this kind of...monkeys at the zoo already talking about it..

On the other hand, if you say "A" talking "B"...
What U.S.A. are going to do to prevent the production of nuclear weapons by religious fanatics?
Maybe Panetta will be waiting when the Iranians would drop bombs on their neighbors??

The question is why Obama is praising you, "Good job", respect to the operation against pirates...
I understood everything...
Iran is not a pirate and Mr. Secretary says only half...

Then together with Sarkozy on horseback or by donkey, sword unsheathed- Forward!! In the attack comrades!! Hurray!! Victory will be ours, enemy will be defeated..

The CBS 60 minutes story was old hat. The interview was actually conducted on December 19, 2011. Most of what Panetta said was "qualified" by his press secretary the next day, showing that Panetta still didn't know much about his new job at the time. See the article in New York Times of December 20, 2011, about this issue.

Hopefully the gringos will get into a war with Iran, will spend there 20-30 years with the same success that they are enjoying in Afghanistan right now and will then get kicked out of this country the same way they just got kicked out of Iraq.
