Art and politics. Creativity and dissent. The avant-garde vs. the ruling elite.

From feminist punk rockers Pussy Riot to the anarchist art collective Voina, Russia's avant-garde community has become increasingly bold in challenging the authorities in a variety of creative ways.

In the latest edition of "The Power Vertical Podcast," Kirill Kobrin, managing editor of RFE/RL's Russian Service, joins me to discuss the changing relationship between contemporary artists and the Kremlin.

Also on the podcast, a discussion of how local politics has become the new front in the battle between the authorities and the opposition.

The only time I can say, as far as I know at least, that art has had a direct and powerful role in immediately bringing up people's mindset for revolutionary change is Portugal, April 1974 'Grandola, Vila Morena'.

Not even the Singing Revolution, which took years of over-night euphoria for change, had the devastating effect of a regime like that slow tempo song had on a whole country. I doubt any of the thousands who took to the streets in Lisbon that day were not chanting or had heard the song.

Anywhere else, art in oppressive societies, whether is music, film, painting, sculpture, etc., only serves to remember the new generations how bad their parents had it.

since when kids are doing what they want to do and when public is protecting their right to do it. btw, those on the pic aren't adolescents. as far as i know, the one from pussy's was making sex in public museum while was pregnant, just a week before she got the baby. some of them are married with kids, too. anyway, it's immoral.
