BAKU -- Police have arrested at least 30 protestors in Baku as authorities prevented opposition and independent youth groups from staging a rally in the Azerbaijani capital.

Correspondents say that officers moved in within 10 minutes to detain activists after previously warning that the gathering on October 20, which city authorities had refused to authorize, would be stopped.

The demonstrators, from the youth wings of the Musavat and the Popular Front opposition parties, called for dissolution of the parliament.

The opposition protests come in the wake of a scandal over a video purportedly showing a ruling-party lawmaker offering to guarantee a seat in parliament in return for a $1.3 million bribe.
