Concerns remain about the way some criminal prosecutions of former government members have been handled in Georgia, U.S. State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said.
Answering a question at a daily briefing on October 23 regarding the recent jailing of Georgia's former defense and interior ministers on abuse of office, torture, and murder charges, Psaki said she did not want to get into specific cases.
Psaki added, however, that Washington continues "to stress to the Georgian government the importance of due process and rule of law and of conducting investigations with transparency to avoid even the perception that the judicial system is being used for political retribution."
In March, the U.S. State Department expressed concern over Georgian prosecutors' decision to summon ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili for questioning in multiple criminal investigations.
