Romanian Nightclub Death Toll Rises To 46


A popular television editor and photographer died on November 9 after being severely burned during a nightclub fire in Bucharest, raising the death toll in the tragedy to 46.

ProTV news said Teodora Maftei died at a hospital in Israel from burns sustained in the October 30 fire.

The fire triggered nationwide protests that are now in their seventh day and have led to the resignation of Prime Minister Victor Ponta and his leftist government.

While the number of protesters fell during the weekend, to an estimated 1,000 in Bucharest, President Klaus Iohannis attended at the rally on November 8.

Iohannis, who made no comment to the media, stayed for about 20 minutes while many in the crowd booed and others shouted he should help cleanse the political class, widely seen as corrupt.

Iohannis has said he will resume consultations with political parties and civil society leaders about a new prime minister from November 9.
