Russians Foil Plot Against Chemical Facility

Police in Russia have arrested two North Caucasus men on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack on a chemical-weapons storage depot.

Russia's Investigative Committee said on October 15 that the detained young men -- aged 19 and 21 -- are suspected of planning an attack on a storage facility in a village in the Kirov region, some 1,000 kilometers northeast of Moscow. Their names were not released.

Investigators say they found bomb components, as well as "literature with extremist content," in an abandoned house in the area where the suspects were living.

Russia's volatile North Caucasus has been plagued by an Islamist insurgency for years. Islamic separatists have also claimed several terrorist attacks in other Russian regions, including a deadly Moscow airport bombing in 2011 and a metro attack in 2010.

Based on reporting by Reuters, Interfax, and AFP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
