Policeman Wounded By Attackers In Daghestan

A police officer has been wounded in an attack by unknown armed men in the volatile region of Daghestan in Russia's North Caucasus.

Police in Daghestan say an unknown group of armed men opened fire on a police car in the southwestern district of Tsumada on October 8.

The attack took place a day after police in Daghestan's capital, Makhachkala, detained a local resident on suspicion of fighting alongside Islamic militants in Syria.

Also on October 7, police killed a man in Makhachkala after he refused to show his identification papers and opened fire on police instead.

Daghestan is beset by violence linked to an Islamist insurgency rooted in two post-Soviet separatist wars in neighboring Chechnya as well as organized crime, political disputes, and clan rivalries.

Based on reporting by TASS, RIA Novosti, and Interfax

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
