Russian lawmaker Yevgeny Fyodorov of the ruling United Russia party recently told the State Duma that Russian children adopted by U.S. parents were nothing but "slaves who are not even protected by U.S. law."

Svetlana Goryacheva, deputy chief of the opposition A Just Russia faction, went further, claiming that 10 percent of adopted orphans would be "tortured, used for organ transplants or sexual pleasure."

Goryacheva then educated television host Ksenia Sobchak and Dozhd TV's audience about the fate of adopted Russian children, comparing them to medieval Mamluk soldiers who she said were taken away by Middle Eastern captors from their homeland to be trained as warriors against their own people.

"Unlike you, I don't idealize America," Goryacheva said on Dozhd TV. "I seriously believe that these children may be used in a war against us, against my grandson, against my son, and against the grandsons and sons of many people living in Russia."

Russian orphans trained to be slaves in Western lands...

Wait, we've heard this somewhere else. Oh yes, isn't that the plot of the Soviet blockbuster "They Have Their Motherland" ("У них есть Родина")?

The storyline of this 1949 film (watch it here), based on Sergei Mikhalkov's play "I Want to Go Home," centers on two Soviet intelligence officers, Aleksei Dobrynin and Vsevolod Sorokin, looking for a British orphanage for Russian children in the western part of Germany occupied by Allied forces after World War II.

The British don't allow the Russian kids, who were separated during the war from their families by the Nazis and then freed from captivity by Allied forces, to go back to Russia.

The new caregivers even make the children change their names. "With proper upbringing, these puppies will grow to be good attack dogs," says a British captain (at the 5:00 mark).

The main child character is Irina Sokolova, who is forced to assume the name Irma when she is taken in by a German foster parent, restaurant owner Frau Wurst.

Despite attempts by Allied forces to disrupt the Soviet officers' quest, Dobrynin and Sorokin find the orphanage and expose it as a staging post for future slave soldiers and house servants.

At the climax of the film, Soviet officers speak to an allied commission demanding that the children be returned to the Soviet Union (71:50 mark). When cross-examined, Irina Sokolova says her foster mother uses her as an unpaid servant in her restaurant: "I wash clothes, do the dishes, serve beer" (73:40).

In the end, Dobrynin and Sorokin triumphantly bring the children back to Moscow. Irina Sokolova is first to emerge from the airplane.

"Irina, this is your motherland," says a uniformed woman as Irina walks down the gangway to the jubilant fanfare of a brass band and a cheering crowd (80:50).

The film closes with the mother of one of the rescued children making a passionate speech before a Kremlin gathering: "They want to turn our children into slaves. They condemn them to the dreadful fate of people with no motherland. They are preparing them to be used as cannon fodder in a new war."

Indeed, people tend to believe what they see in movies more than they should.

Or maybe they don't. Honestly, I don't think Ms Goryacheva (Ms Hot -- oh, that's precious...) really believes any of that. She knows what Putin wants and she gave it to him. The appeal to Soviet cinematography is just to strike a chord with other Russians -- to make them think that life is imitating art. As in Soviet times.

Sad when a country has to use its children as ammunition in the new cold war. Our president should reset the button to "OFF".

Actually about 1/2 of the 250,000 children adopted each year worldwide are adopted by Americans. Given that the USA's population of 300 million is only 4.3% of the 7 billion in the world, it is clear that Americans adopt much more than any other country.

Ms Goryacheva is either completely bonkers or thinks that the voters are idiots. Or she's just a Potemkin opposition politician whose job is to make the government look sane by comparison.

I congratulate the moderators working for Radio Liberty,...
Is not yet over the New Year holiday, and they have already started to ban my comments.
As for Mrs. Goryacheva, Mr. Putin and other "prominent" members, we should ban them from approaching the orphans closer than 200 meters..
We know their friends:
arab terrorists
abkhaz bandits
camel from the cave of Kurdistan....

Shame shame shame on all RFE/RL moderators-how can ya possibly censor anything by the georgian genius from Mosscow-his posts were our only ray of light in this dreary cold winter nights-why,he is the only one to beat Eugenia`s and Jack`s wisdom and I was hoping to become a professor of psychopathology by just analysing his posts!!! Now I shall write to all my senators and congressmen to move your radio from Golden Prague to Vahtangian`s log cabin by the mosscow river and I`m going to listen to Radio Mosscow and watch Russia Today from now on!!!

We know also that the camel from Kurdistan is also an orphan. At the zoo in Moscow there are two camels they want a baby camel.I ask drunken Mr. Bastrykin to catch camel and put him in a cage to his new parents.
Besides Mrs. Goryacheva could bring bran for camel, present from members of the Duma.
In this way, everyone would be in business, and most importantly, the camel will constantly chew bran and talk less stupidity on Radio Liberty

Aah,Vahe,we -thats me& my camels were working in a circus as georgian tamers & we had tamed many georgians, teaching them to walk, eat, drink, talk almost like humans and nobody, but, nobody, man could tell the difference between a human and a georgian. But then came mr.Gorbatchoff with his bloody perestroika& the georgians were left to their own devices and all circusses in Russia went bankrupt `cause Georgia had turned into the biggest circuss of them all and it was completely free.So we went to Abkhazia and Ossetia -free of georgian missrule and now we are working for the Caucasian Underground to free the beautiful Caucasus of leaders who eat neckties on TV,KGB knights in their own donkey skin, and simple minded vakhtangs-a collective name for a buncha morons specialized in talking turkey on enemy sites.Keep up the good work ,brothers, sistas and vakhtangs, you are already adopted by the fallen angels and will be happy to fool around all the way to the fiery furnace.Yours,Camel and his herd!!!
