The Russian Federal Space Agency, Roscosmos, announced on March 28 that it would work with NASA to construct a new orbital space station to replace the International Space Station (ISS).
Roscosmos chief Igor Komarov made the announcement and added that "this will be an open project, which not only the current ISS participants can take part in. It will be open to all who would like to participate."
Roscosmos and NASA recently agreed to extend the operation of the ISS until 2024.
Russia had said earlier it would pull out of the ISS project in 2020.
However, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who oversees Russia's space program, wrote later on Twitter, "The Russian government will study the results of talks between Roscosmos and NASA. The decision will be taken later."
