Russian Space Cargo Ship Burned In Atmosphere

An unmanned supply ship that failed to reach the International Space Station reentered the Earth's atmosphere and burned over the Pacific Ocean in the early morning hours of May 8, Russian space agency Roscosmos announced.

"The spacecraft entered dense atmosphere at the 160th coil above the central part of the Pacific," a Roscosmos spokesman said.

Earlier, the agency had said only small fragments of the spacecraft's structure might reach the Earth’s surface and any debris would be similar in size to debris from a normal planned descent.

Progress supply ships are designed to disintegrate as they descend back through the Earth’s atmosphere.

The agency said it is investigating the cause of the ship's failure and may have to adjust the schedule of future space flights due to the accident involving the Progress M-27M spacecraft.

Based on reporting by AP, Reuters, Interfax, AFP, and Tass

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
