Authorities in Russia say 14 prosecutors have been fired after a probe exposed a gambling ring that made up to $10 million a month while the prosecutors turned a blind eye.

Aleksandr Anikin, a prosecutor in the Moscow region, said the authorities “intend to decisively cleanse the ranks of the Moscow region prosecutors.”

The Federal Security Service (FSB) last year said the gambling ring spanned 15 towns and was under the protection of prosecutors.

The investigation of the case, which involves a chain of underground casinos, is continuing.

Former Moscow region prosecutor Aleksandr Ignatenko is in a Polish jail following his arrest last month. Russia has requested his extradition.
