VLADIVOSTOK, Russia -- The trial of a former police officer charged with beating his subordinates has opened in the far-eastern Russian city of Vladivostok, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Major Igor Matveyev was dismissed last month and officially charged with beating police under his command after he posted a video appeal on the Internet, asking Russian President Dmitry Medvedev "to help stop corruption among Vladivostok police."

At the trial on July 19, two police officers testified that Matveyev had beaten them regularly. Matveyev pleaded not guilty and accused the two officers of lying.

The next hearing was scheduled for July 26.
