Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic says he will push the government to call for early elections to be held in March.

Vucic, the leader of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) -- the main party in Serbia's ruling coalition -- made his comments shortly after the resignation of Economy Minister Sasa Radulovic, who is disappointed by parliament's failure to pass major economic reforms that are opposed by labor unions.

"Serbia's step into the future has not been quick enough," Vucic said.

Serbia opened membership talks with the EU on January 21 and Belgrade officials have said they would like to be a member of the 28-country bloc by 2020.

The SNS is currently riding high in opinion polls and it hopes snap elections would give it more seats in the next parliament.
