Serbia's ambassador to NATO has committed suicide by leaping from a parking garage at Brussels airport.

Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic confirmed Branislav Milinkovic's suicide, calling it "a very tragic event."

He said it was not clear why Milinkovic took his life.

Serbian media reports say Milinkovic jumped from a multistory building on the evening of December 4, adding that he killed himself in front of a senior Serbian Foreign Ministry official.

Serbia is not a NATO member but has representation at the alliance's headquarters in Brussels.

The death occurred as NATO foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels.

Milinkovic, a long-serving diplomat, was appointed Serbia's ambassador to NATO in 2009.
