DUSHANBE -- The daughter-in-law of a high-profile Tajik diplomat has been sentenced to 12 1/2 years in prison for drug trafficking.
A district court in Dushanbe announced Mushtari Muborakshoeva's verdict on January 31.
Muborakshoeva was arrested at Dushanbe Airport in mid-December as she was traveling to Moscow with her husband, Qoimdod Qoimdodov.
Police said they discovered 2 1/2 kilograms of heroin inside the couple's luggage.
Muborakshoeva was detained immediately, but her husband was set free.
Qoimdodov is the son of Qozidavlat Qoimdodov, Tajikistan's ambassador to Belarus and former deputy prime minister.
Muborakshoeva's case has drawn widespread media attention in Tajikistan because of her family connections.
