The first events of the 2014 Winter Olympics are due to begin in Sochi, Russia on February 6 – even though the ceremony that marks the official opening of the Olympics is scheduled for February 7.
The first competitions scheduled on February 6 include the team men and team pairs of short-program figure skating, as well as freestyle skiing and snowboarding events.
Russian President Vladimir Putin toured the Olympic village on February 5, declaring that Russia is ready to host the games.
The Olympic torch also arrived in Sochi on February 5, having traveling some 65,000 kilometers.
The Olympic torch relay including a jaunt to the North Pole and a visit into space with Russian cosmonauts.
The Sochi Olympics' competitive events are scheduled to conclude on February 23.
